Saigon Sam Part 3: Shower Water Detoxification With Aquasana Filter
Guide to safe showering in questionable tap water. This was filmed in Ho Chi Minh City, but it applies generally. Use swimming goggles and an Aquasana shower filter to protect yourself from common urban water contaminants, such as manganese vapor, chlorine, chloramine, iron, lead, pesticide, and industrial effluent. Note that the Aquasana doesn't produce potable water! It only reduces the toxicity enough to mitigate skin burns and inhalated carcinogens. You can buy an Aquasana and filter cartidges online in the US, but not many other places. Filters typically last 6 months. You can tell that it's time to change it when your skin starts to burn post-shower, as is typical with unfiltered tap water. A gender-changing pipe segment (such as the blue plastic one in this video) may be necessary to connect the filter apparatus to your shower outlet. Be sure to seal the ends with nylon plumbers' tape. Generally, a pipe diameter change will not be necessary. Inevitably, the goggles will come loose, allowing water to flow into the eyes. Eye wash (distilled water -- not contact lens solution) will provide relief post-shower. Eye wash is not, to my knowledge, available in Vietnam.
